I’m Taking Crazy on Vacation

It dawned on me this morning when it was 2:00 in the morning and I was crafting a second necklace while I should have been packing for the two-week-long road trip we’re taking right after my hair appointment to do a drastic color change that I might be a little bit crazy.

Who makes crafts at 2:00 in the morning?  Let’s face it – who packs at 2:00 in the morning?  But me?  I craft at 2:00 in the morning while I should be packing.  That says something.

(I’d first like to point out that my skin isn’t really that red, and second, I promise I won’t wear all those necklaces at the same time.  It’s just something I do at 2:00 in the morning – I wear a lot of necklaces.)

Then there’s the 2-week-road trip.  TWO WEEKS.  With a 6-month-old.

And finally, the hair dying.  Which often doesn’t go well for me. Let’s up the ante by throwing in family photos while we’re on vacation.  That makes Drastic Hair Dying seem even more crazy.

So we’ve determined that there are several strikes against me.  Can I somehow blame this on the hormones of having “just” had a baby?  Six months still counts as “just,” right?

Normally I try to write about our trips after we’ve taken them because – well, hello!  It’s the internet. There are crazy people out there.  But since it appears I’ve joined the ranks of said crazy people I decided to throw caution to the wind and write about it while were gone.  Because a) we basically packed everything we owned so there’s not much left for the thieves, and b) I can’t go away for 2 weeks and not talk about it.

It started out as a 1 week vacation, and I guess for Tahd it still is.  He has some working to do on this first leg of our trip, but this first leg of our trip put us closer to our eventual destination, so we tagged along to make everything flow more smoothly.  Today we completed our first leg of the journey with only one mishap – Gabe passed the water bottle back to Tahd without putting the lid on.  Naturally, Tahd poured the entire contents onto his lap.  Score one for “it looks like he just wet his pants” road trip fun!

Oh, also…my hair is a bit darker than I intended.  But they tell me it’ll lighten up in a few days, and I’m keeping the Dawn Dish Soap trick in my back pocket if there’s any irrational midnight panic on my part.  Which I’ve determined there probably will be because irrational midnight panic is crazy and we’ve already determined about that I am, in fact, crazy.  I’m taking bets on which night the panic will set in.  10-1 odds that it’ll be sometime between now and Sunday.

You can see a teensy bit of it here.  As well,  my dyed scalp.

I combed the internet for every possible bit of road trip fun and printed out a conglomeration of activities, so hopefully Gabe will stay entertained for the entire trip.  Most of our drives are short-to-medium; our longest – 11.5 hours – won’t come until Saturday, so I need to save some goodies until then.

My goals for this vacation are these:

1. Go to the beach. A lot.  Subgoal – don’t get blistery burns.
2. Look uncrazy in our family photos.
3. Sleep during regular sleeping hours.
4. Take at least 25 photos a day on my big camera.  Subgoal – blog them most every day.
5. Have fun.

I had to add in that last one because I realized anyone who sets goals and subgoals for her vacation might be prone to skipping the fun and heading straight for Holy Uptightness That Ends Up Sending Your Children Into Therapy As Adults.  I’ve made peace with my crazy.   I’d like my children to avoid it if at all possible.
