Practical Prayers for Parents

Do you pray for your children?

When Gabe was a baby and we did the customary baby dedication ceremony, one thing I committed to doing on his behalf was praying for him every day.  I’m sorry to say that I don’t think I’ve held up my end of the bargain.  I do often pray for him, but it’s not always daily and even when it is daily, it’s haphazard and panicked since I’ve forgotten to cover seventy three of the last most important issues in sufficient prayer.

For as much as I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants girl, I do love me some lists, charts, and organization.  So when I stumbled onto a prayer calendar for moms I quickly downloaded it and carefully scotch taped it to the inside of my cupboard.

Then I started to pray.

Except the calendar didn’t quite fit our lives.  It recommended a lot of great prayer topics, but most of them didn’t quite get at the heart of what I wanted to pray for on Gabe’s – and now Isla’s – behalf.  They were a little nebulous and theoretical and I felt like I was mostly reciting the suggested words rather than actually praying for these things to happen (or not happen) in my kids’ lives.  So I stopped using it, only occasionally glancing its way when I finally got around to putting the dishes away.

What I really wanted was a list of practical prayers, the things that are really on my heart each and every day.  Finally, in the wee hours of the morning, I actually got around to making my desired calendar.  And I wanted to share it – not because there aren’t other great prayer lists out there but because I figure one more can’t hurt.  :)

This is a list of 31 items on my heart – things that affect my children every day and things that won’t affect them for years.  Some of them are a little more abstract than others, but (at least for me) each one of these things is something I’ve been thinking about on behalf of my children and want to purposefully pray for its practical inclusion (or exclusion, in some cases) in their lives.

Feel free to download this calendar and share it with whomever you wish.  It’s designed to fit on an 8.5×11 sheet of paper.   If you do, I’d love to know who you are and what’s on your heart on behalf of your children.

Our babies are precious and need lots of prayer!  I consider it a huge privilege to have the responsibility of praying for them and hope this calendar helps keep me on my toes!
