I turn 35 today (whoops! meant to publish this yesterday!), and this birthday is hitting me more than any of my previous birthdays. Well, except for my 10th birthday. I remember being overwhelmed at the thought that I’d never again be just ONE digit at a time. The horror!
Yes, my issues started young.
Last year I wrote about my idea for “40 by 40″ – 40 things I wanted to accomplish before I turn 40 years old. I definitely lived my 20s more mindlessly and dutifully, and I don’t want to say the same of my 30s. I started working on some of them even though the list wasn’t yet finalized. Since then, I’ve finalized my list and ticked off a few. Here’s the update:
- Run a race
- Reach my goal weight
- Go back to Disney World
- Write a book
- Pay off our credit cards
- Dye my hair red
Try to have one more baby- well, we started…not sure things are going to work out, but we’ll see- Read the entire Bible
- Start a business
- Go away for more than one consecutive night with Tahd
- See a Broadway show
- Complete a Week In The Life album
- Complete a December Daily album
- Go camping
- Go canoeing
- Host a Harvest party
- Host a Favorite Things party
Upgrade my camera body- my birthday present this year!- Ding dong ditch someone (with treats, not pranks)
- Go to a spa
- Go to a blog conference
- Join a home group through our church
- Complete a mondo purge
- Have a girls’ weekend with my mom and sisters
- Start saving for college
- Go to a concert
- Take a hot air balloon ride
- Sew a dress for Isla
- Join a book club
- Knit a sweater
- Renew my passport
- Travel to another country
- Cull baby clothes
- Buy a newer car
- Do yoga every day for a month
- Read 75 books
- Meditate every day for a month
- Diffuse essential oils
- Buy a lottery ticket
- Get a new mattress
So that’s my list for these next 5 years. Above all, I want to stay engaged, try new things, and develop the habit of enjoying each year. I think those practices will go a long way toward happy 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

That’s so cool that you want to do a Favorite Things Party–me too! I did a 30 by 30 challenge, and I completed more than half of the things on my list. I don’t consider it a failure because I never would have done any of those things if I hadn’t written out my list in the first place.
I like “bucket lists” for shorter time periods, like for big birthdays. It’s the people who say they just want to do something before they die that never actually do it. Good luck!
